Middle school math teacher accuses entire class of cheating on an exam after they outperform her own students: ‘The accusations were completely baseless’

So, story time. This happened in sixth grade.
In my country, it's common for students to be divided into sections. While sectioning nowadays is based on a mix of different factors, back in the 90s, it was strictly based on

grades. Section 1 was the highest-performing class of the year, followed by Section 2, and so on. My year at the time had 13 sections in total.

Those in the final sections were usually the ones struggling academically, but that didn't automatically mean they were the most

difficult to deal with. How do I know? Because I was in Section 5, and we were known as the most difficult kids in our year. We were lazy,

disruptive, and just didn't listen. Academically, we were doing fine, but we faced a major internal struggle because of that behavior.

So, we have this really great math teacher. Let's call her Miss Sally. She was nice, fun, and never looked down on us. She just had a way of making you enjoy the subject she was

teaching. And remember, this was math! Most kids absolutely hated math, but she had a unique way of making us actually enjoy the subject. We weren't the top-performing

students in the school, but we genuinely liked learning from her, and because of that, our grades actually improved.

Then came one of our major periodic exams. Our class actually scored the highest in math, though we didn't know at the time. It's just that the exam was challenging but we were

confident we did well. We were not aiming for top marks after all. So, you can imagine our surprise when another teacher, let's call her Miss Martha, stormed into our classroom one

day and berated us for cheating on the math exam. We were completely confused because we knew for a fact that we didn't cheat.

So, it became a thing. Rumors started but it didn't escalate. But we were kind of confused and mad about it. It turns out, Miss Martha was the homeroom teacher of Section 1. The

highest performing class of the year and she was also among the math teachers in school. I think she didn't like the fact that a lower
via Being-Wordy-2000
section scored higher than her class? We also found out section 6, also scored significantly well. We were all under Miss Sally's math class.

So, Miss Martha I believe was mad because her classes were not as performing well as the classes under Miss Sally. We found out later those two got into a fight. Miss Sally defended us because the exam was proctored. Someone

was literally monitoring us when we were doing the exam. How could we cheat? And Miss Martha claiming that we are Section 5. How could our section be performing as well as the higher sections because we are Section 5!

Anyway, the resolution happened behind closed doors, so we never found out exactly what was said. All we knew was that the accusations were completely baseless, and we were told to just go about our day. Needless to say, we still hated Miss Martha after that.

Now that I am older, and a teacher myself, I realize that Miss Martha's ego probably just took a massive hit. She was a math teacher and the homeroom adviser of the highest-

performing class in the year. The fact that another teacher, and a bunch of Section 5 kids, completely outperformed her and her class in her subject must have driven her crazy.

It's funny how a grown adult's insecurity made her bu y a room full of eleven and twelve- year-olds just because we did well on a test. At the end of the day, Section 5 didn't need to

cheat. We just had a teacher who knew how to teach and made us love the subject we enjoyed studying about it. Thank you for reading.
